2.08 Tampa Bay Meat Goats — RB Chris Polk

In the real world: Polk, a promising ballcarrier from Washington, was heavier at the Senior Bowl (224 lb.) than he was during the 2011 season, and his draft stock started falling at that point. Even though he lost 9 pounds between that game and the Combine, Todd McShay said, "He doesn't look the part physically... His body is unimpressive." At the Combine, he had a 4.46 in his first 40 at the Combine but a 4.57 in the second, which made me wonder about his conditioning: Was he still too winded from the first 40 to do as well in the second? Mike Mayock said that a degenerative shoulder condition was why he went undrafted, and he has already had two shoulder surgeries.  Polk had noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews look at the shoulder and Dr. Andrews wrote a letter stating that the surgery had caused some scarring, but nothing that should prevent Polk from playing football.
In the TUFF world: This sets a new record--the earliest point at which an undrafted free agent has ever gone in the TUFF Draft (previously held by Tennessee for taking LeGarrette Blount at 2.10 in 2010). It's also the first red X I hand out in this Draft Wrapup (which I'm sure Paul Granholm will vehemently disagree with). I don't get why anyone would take an undrafted free agent like Polk in Round 2 when he has to compete with second-year pro Dion Lewis and 7th-round pick Bryce Brown for touches behind McCoy. Then there's the conditioning issue and the shoulder issues. Why not WR A.J. Jenkins? It's not like the Goats are loaded at wide receiver.
