3.08 Tampa Bay Meat Goats — QB Nick Foles

In the real world: The best QB in the history of the University of Arizona goes to Philly to be a developmental prospect under Michael Vick. Todd McShay reviewed film of his senior season and said he was impressed with how he fared under pressure. But Scouts, Inc. cohort Kevin Weidl disagreed, saying that poor decision making, lack of athleticism and tempo were minuses. Mel Kiper, who rated Foles as the fourth-best QB available in the draft, says Foles could stand to be more consistent both in terms of accuracy and decision-making. Mike Sando: "Foles struggled with his throws, particularly on post-corner routes. Coaches appeared to advise him on his deep-ball trajectory after Foles overthrew Arizona teammate Juron Criner on an early deep pass. Foles put too much air under subsequent deep passes. He did not hit receivers in stride on those balls." Cecil Lammey (footballguys.com, 102.3 ESPN Radio in Denver) slammed Foles, stating that against Colorado, he threw 3 picks against a Buffaloes secondary so riddled with injuries that they had to start running backs. However, there were high winds in that game, so maybe the outcome was more decision making-related than talent-related. Besides, he improved year-to-year on completion percentage and yards per attempt, and these are improvements you want to see from any QB you draft.
In the TUFF world: Carolina, you can't say you didn't see that coming. Tampa Bay's QB depth was compromised when Tim Tebow went from Broncos' starter to Jets', er, 20-snap-a-game gimmick player as fallout from the Peyton Manning free agent saga. Paul Granholm passed up Ryan Tannehill in Round 1 and missed out on Tannehill and Brandon Weeden in Round 2, but got one that gets to work under noted QB guru Andy Reid, who has brought out the best in Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb.
