4.04 Arizona Outlaws — WR Devon Wylie

In the real world: The Kansas City Chiefs picked Wylie in Round 4, where he is presently 4th in the pecking order at wide receiver. He arrives with a history of injuries:
  • Tight calf prevented him from running shuttle and three-cone drills at combine.
  • Missed most of the 2010 season after fracturing a bone in his foot against Cincinnati in the season opener and received a medical redshirt.
  • Suffered a hamstring injury against San Jose State in 2009 and missed the next four games.
  • Missed four games after injuring his foot against Wisconsin in 2008.
He's 5'9" and 187 lb. with 4.39 speed, which, to some people, sounds like "the next Wes Welker," and with Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel being former cogs from the New England Patriots machine, it's easy to connect the dots that way. But Welker was much more productive as a wideout in his final two years at Texas Tech. Welker had more receiving TDs as a senior than Wylie did in his entire college career; Welker also had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons while Wylie never had one. Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly notes that most of Wiley's TDs last year came in returning punts, not as a wideout; and that he also needs to work on route-running.
In the TUFF world: Another of Arizona's priorities was improving its depth at wide receiver, which was exposed last season after Sidney Rice and Kenny Britt got hurt.  And besides, we're in Round 4, and time will tell whether Wylie is indeed going to be used like Welker or if he's just another bit of fool's gold. I'll give 'Zona credit for finding something that glitters.
