2.16 Tampa Bay Meat Goats — RB Chris Rainey

In the real world: Steve Muench wrote on February 14: “At 5'8" and 173 pounds, Rainey isn't powerful between the tackles and doesn't project as a primary ball carrier, but ... he can release out of the backfield or split out wide, and he has the burst to separate from coverage regardless of where he lines up. ... Initial quickness and considerable top-end speed make Rainey a threat every time he steps on the field.” Rainey could be a 3rd-down back/slot receiver hybrid, similar to Dexter McCluster; or he could follow in the footsteps of backs like Darren Sproles and Jacquizz Rodgers. Rainey's 4.37 40 at the Combine was tied for first among running backs at the Combine. With the Steelers, he could be the speedy back to complement Isaac Redman. Rainey fell in the NFL due in part to off-field baggage concerns; however, by landing in Pittsburgh, he has the perfect teammate to keep him in check: Maurkice Pouncey, the leader of the Steeler O-line, and Rainey were not only teammates at Florida, but they go all the way back to Lakeland High School.
In the TUFF world: Tampa Bay continues to take running backs, pouncing on Rainey after San Diego did not handcuff him to their other Steeler RBs at 2.12. This is a much better pick than Chris Polk (2.08), in my estimation.
