4.10 Denver Devils — TE/FB Evan Rodriguez

In the real world: The versatile, 6'1", 243-lb. Rodriguez (you can use him as a fullback, H-back or tight end, and he played QB in high school, too) had 35 receptions for 479 yards and 2 touchdowns last year. His job situation with the Chicago Bears is promising in that new offensive coordinator Mike Tice is going to use the tight end more (his predecessor, Mike Martz, only used tight ends once in a blue moon). But he'll have to compete for receptions against two veterans: Kellen Davis, who scored 5 touchdowns last year despite only having 18 receptions; and Matt Spaeth, who used to vulture touchdowns from Heath Miller in Pittsburgh.
In the TUFF world: The Denver Devils finally take part in this draft by buying this pick from Cleveland. They needed depth at tight end because their current #1 tight end, Tony Gonzalez, is supposedly leaning towards retiring after this season. To me, it's a "homer" pick and a speculative bid--James Casey was extremely versatile at Rice and scored a lot of TDs there, but has not been used a lot with the Houston Texans, and I don't see Rodriguez being used much more than Casey has been, especially considering that the Bears are just as likely to use him at fullback (their only other fullback is Tyler Clutts). Glad you could finally join the party, Rick.
